Witchhazel sticks

Hamamelis Virginica is unique among North American trees because its fruit and flowers appear on the tree at the same time. Late in fall when all the hardwood trees are bare, the bright yellow flower sprays rebel against the cold gray skies.

Witch hazel has been well used for centuries as an effective ingredient in skin care products, and historically its pliable branches were made into bows by Native Americans.

But the most interesting use of witch hazel wood is to dowse or divine water, or other underground resources. Forked branches were cut and held by dowsers, or water witches, who could feel the pull of the stick downward when near underground water, gold, metal ores, oil or gravesites. Dowsers and diving rods are still used today to locate water, and there is no scientific explanation for their success.

With these striking attributes, It is easy to understand how this tree is believed to have magical uses. The bark and twigs are used for inspiration, protection against evil, to cool passions, and to help mend a broken heart.
